Description
As one enters the South Dakota town of Rochford, a sign boasts a population of 8. Rochford is a T in the road with a general store/gas station and maybe a dozen buildings that we could see. It lies 22.4 miles south of Deadwood and 21.6 miles north of Hill City along highway 14 through the Black Hills. It was a lovely setting for a town and we enjoyed visiting with the friendly shop owner. I assume the "Rochford University" logo on the side of this old truck is a joke, given the size of the town.
Formerly a gold mining town, in December, 1878 Rochford had a population of 500, including a few doctors, a Methodist Episcopal Church, three saloons, six stores, and 100 homes. By January 1879, they had added two hotels, a theater, a butcher shop, two restaurants, two blacksmith shops, and a drug store. There was also a lumber mill that produced 100,000 feet (30,000 m) of lumber and 50,000 feet (15,000 m) of roof shingles.
