Description
The night of December 30, 2021 was a tremendously scary night for a whole lot of people, including me and my family. The wind was howling with gusts up to 100 miles per hour and it was rapidly spreading the flames through Boulder County, Colorado. We are still searching for its origin, but it spread from highway 93 in the foothills just south of Boulder and raced through the towns of East Boulder, Louisville, and Superior consuming well over 1,000 homes.
Our neighborhood was spared, however we did have to evacuate that night. The smell of smoke was extremely strong as we piled the cats, suitcases full of clothes, and laptop computers into the car. A few days later, when many of the roads reopened we took a drive through the area to see just how bad it was. I have to say, the pictures on television never quite capture the enormity of what one sees in person. We are so saddened for all the thousands of people who are now without homes, not to mention the pets that were lost by families who weren't able to get back into their houses to rescue them. We did know people whose homes were destroyed.
This photo was taken at a burned out salvage yard in Superior. Dozens of vintage cars and trucks were destroyed. The gentleman standing behind the closest VW was the owner. I asked him if it was 'his place', to which he responded "It used to be."
