Description
I took this photograph about 10 years ago while attending a family reunion in Bath, Maine. Most of the attendees decided to go on a short boat tour of the area while discussing the distant ancestors who inhabited these parts. I just did some research and have learned that this is the "Squirrel Point Lighthouse" on Arrowsic Island. Our boat tour went down the Back River and around the southern tip of Arrowsic Island where the expanse of water was massive.
About that time a very, very strong wind, accompanied by some very, very dark clouds came up and scared us all half to death. Scooting past this lighthouse brought us back to the relative safety of the Kennebec River and on to the tour's end.
"Arrowsic was one of the first settlements in New England with more than fifty families by 1670. In 1676, Indians stormed inside the stockade gate and massacred nine of the families.
For a while, the Keeper at the Kennebec River Range Light Station was given the added responsibility of tending the Squirrel Point Lighthouse, until it was finally automated in 1979." Quoted from http://www.nelights.com/exploring/Maine/squirrel_pt_light.html
