Description
While visiting my friend in Gillette, Wyoming she insisted we stop and see Devils Tower in North Eastern Wyoming on our way to Deadwood, South Dakota. We weren't sure we wanted to take the detour, but ended up very happy we did! It is just one of those things that Americans should all put on their bucket lists.
Devils Tower was the first United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. It stands 867 feet (265 m) from summit to base. A sigh at the base of the monolith reads "The tower is held sacred by many American Indians and highly regarded by other peoples..." Brightly colored prayer flags adorn the trees and bushes surrounding the tower.
