Description
I have lived in Phoenix, Arizona twice in my life, but had never been to South Mountain. This time I decided to give it a look. It is a winding road climbing higher than I had anticipated, and boasting a magnificent view of Phoenix from Dobbins Lookout at the top. This is a sepia toned version of the original photograph shown in this gallery.
Coming back down we stopped to investigate this little stone building that has crumbled, losing a wall or two and a roof. Upon doing some research I discovered that Scorpion Gulch was built in 1936 as a home and store by William Lunsford. There he sold Indian curios, sodas, and candy. It remained operational until 1966, and in the 1970s operated as a bar. Scorpion Gulch was listed on the historic preservation register in October 1990.
