Description
At more than 16,000 acres, South Mountain Park/Preserve in Phoenix, Arizona is one of the largest municipally managed parks in the nation and consists of three mountain ranges - the Ma Ha Tauk, Gila and Guadalupe. Dobbins Lookout, at 2,330 feet, is the highest point in the park that is available to the public. The lookout was named after James C. Dobbins, the chairman of the Phoenix Planning Commission who spearheaded the efforts to purchase the land. The stone structure was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Dobbins Lookout provides a magnificent view of Phoenix and surrounding cities.
