Description
The American pika, a diurnal species of pika, is found in the mountains of western North America, usually in boulder fields at or above the tree line, which is where I discovered this darling critter. This was taken at the summit of Mount Evans, one of our fabulous Colorado fourteeners standing at 14,271 feet (4,350 m) in elevation.
Pikas are herbivores, grazing on the ground cover of the tundra, and live to the age of 6 or 7 years. Part of the order Lagomorpha, the pika is a small member of the rabbit family. The original photograph has been altered in the digital domain to create this lovely work of art.
